It’s been a while since I updated you all on my pregnancy. Although I am only 33 weeks pregnant, I thought I would do a third trimester update. The third trimester starts at 29 weeks and carries on up until 40 weeks. If you haven’t already, go check out my first trimester update and my second trimester update.
Since I last updated you, the most obvious change has to be the bump! In the last trimester of the pregnancy, you are supposed to eat an extra 300 calories a day to feed the little one. Half of the weight that I am putting on, now goes to my little man, so I have definitely noticed a big difference in bump size. Finally, the rest of the world are also recognising the pregnancy, before, I was king of in that in between phase where people weren’t 100% sure if it was a bump or just a belly, but now it’s quite obvious.
I have also noticed a huge increase in the baby’s movements, as he is a lot bigger now, I can feel him kicking, moving around, getting comfy and even hiccuping which is amazing! It is also visible from the outside when the baby is moving, I haven’t seen an actual foot or anything like that (so far) I’ve just seen my belly kind of ripple and move up and down when he moves. It’s great because Daniel and friends and family are now able to interact with the baby and feel him move too! The only hard part is you can’t exactly predict when he is going to move, so when he does, I shout out to let everyone know and by the time they come over to feel him kick, he stops!
Since finishing work for maternity leave, I have noticed that my anxiety has gotten better. Of course, it’s still not great and will probably get worse the further along I get, but at the moment it’s not too bad and I have only had a few panic attacks since. I think the excitement of meeting my little man is taking up most of my brain at the moment!
Sometimes I find myself in the baby’s room, looking around in awe and excitement. The littlest things make me wish he was here already, like looking at his new changing table and his little teddies. We only have a few more bits to get for him now which is so crazy because I feel like it’s going so quickly!! The things we still need to get are:
- a cot mobile
- a parasol for the pushchair
- the nursery set (bumper, curtains, rug, sheets etc)
- more cot blankets
- a thermometer
So only a few more bits and we are ready for our boy (as much as we can be!)
As far as the pregnancy goes, I still have been suffering from the itchy skin but no where near as bad as it used to be! I’m not having to put frozen peas on my legs any more or anything like that so it definitely has improved. I have been having quite awful heartburn every night but I’ve been using Rennie’s and they are my absolute saviour. I take 2 at a time and they work instantly, they are obviously save for pregnant and breastfeeding women. I would recommend these to anyone suffering from heartburn or indigestion or even bloating. They’ve helped me with all three through the pregnancy! They do peppermint or spearmint flavour and I much much prefer spearmint, they remind me of spearmint polo’s!
The next thing I have been experiencing is weird leg pain, kind of like cramps in my calves mainly at night. My legs recently have become quite restless so I’ve been jiffling around in bed which has been keeping Daniel awake too, oops!! I haven’t tried it yet but I think a hot water bottle would solve the problem, but because it’s been quite warm recently, I didn’t really want to use one!
The main symptom I’ve had through my third trimester is pelvic pressure, making it really painful to bend and turn over in bed, and even get out of bed. I think this is due to the baby getting bigger and putting pressure on my uterus. I have heard that a birthing ball would help this so I am thinking about buying one.
I’ve been having some quite weird cravings and kind of dangerous cravings to some extent. I’ve been craving the smell of petrol and cleaning products (bleach mainly) when I have been scrubbing the flat, I’ve been loooooooving the smell of bleach which is quite bad for you and so is the smell of petrol. I’ve googled it and it’s quite a common craving, and it’s the only real craving I’ve had. I’ve always liked the smell of petrol and bleach but because my senses are heightened, my love for these are like 10 times more extreme!
Unfortunately I have noticed some stretch marks underneath the bump and on my boobs which isn’t great but I guess it was bound to happen. Even though I have been taking care of my skin, using lots different creams and oils, eating healthily (relatively) and drinking plenty, I have still experienced stretch marks. I am going to continue to use the creams and oils because I think they are helping to keep them under control and hopefully eventually fade them. Stretch marks are just part of the pregnancy so although they don’t look very nice, there is a beautiful reason they are there and it’s because I’m growing a happy baby boy in my tummy!
As far as my birthing plan goes, I haven’t really had a chance to speak to the midwife about my options. I was given a lot of paper work about the types of pain relief and whether to go to a consultant led unit or a midwife led unit. Apart from that, the midwife hasn’t really touched on the subject, I’m not sure whether that’s because I’m only 33 weeks and maybe that talk comes a little bit later, as it’s my first baby I have no idea what to expect! I’m thinking about having an epidural in the consultant led unit, as I have had an epidural before when having my hip operation, I vaguely know what to expect and how it feels. I’ve heard from a few people that gas an air can make you quite sick so I want to try and avoid that but obviously when I’m in the moment, I’ll probably just take whatever is going to help the pain. But so far my plan is to have an epidural.
I will now be seeing the midwife every 2 weeks at my GP surgery to monitor the baby, it’s so amazing getting to hear his heartbeat so often because it reassures me that he’s okay. My next appointment is the 1st June so not long now.
Once the nursery is ready, I will be doing a nursery tour post and probably a video too!
Only 7 weeks to go (hopefully) and our baby boy will be here, so excited!!! 😀
Thank you so much for reading,
Lots of love, Laura and Bump x
